A New Chapter on the Road: From Toyota Wish to BYD Seal 6 Electric Vehicle

Our Toyota Wish is 9.5 years old, and its COE expires this November. As the date crept closer, a question we’d been quietly avoiding became impossible to ignore — do we keep the car, or let it go?

It wasn’t just about money. It was about our daily life. Every morning, we drive Wei Ze to school. He’s in Secondary 2 now, and without the car, his day would start a lot earlier — up by 6 a.m., navigating the LRT and MRT before most people are awake. Doable, but not something we wanted to put him through.

For years, we told ourselves a car is a convenience, not a necessity. But when we actually faced giving it up, we realised how deeply that “convenience” had woven itself into our lives.

In the end, we decided to move forward rather than hold on — and got a new EV, the BYD Seal 6.

The Wish had served us well. A little too well, honestly — it went through more than a few bumps over the years, with the front, side, and rear doors all replaced at different points. It had done its job and carried us through a good stretch of life. But it felt like the right time to part ways.

The choice to go with BYD came after some research. They’ve grown into a serious global player, even overtaking Tesla in recent sales figures. We test-drove a few models, and the Seal 6 just felt right — practical, comfortable, and modern without being over the top.

Then things moved fast. Very us.

My wif , Jas is decisive. Once we were both comfortable, there was no dragging it out. One day, three dealerships, all the quotes. The next day, we signed.

Even now, it feels a little surreal — committing to a purchase this size this quickly. I joked that we may have just pushed retirement back by five more years. We laughed. But also, a little bit, we meant it.

Still — some decisions aren’t purely logical. They’re a mix of reason, timing, and gut feel.

And when it feels right, you go with it.
