My home network upgrading version 2.0 – part I

It is almost 2 years since last my home network upgrading that I changed ASUS AC-88U hardware router to DIY All-In-One X86 software router with unRAID system for the internet connection. AC-88U is only running as WiFi access point.

So far, it is serving well for my Work-From-Home in this COVID-19 pandemic. But there are some concerns.

  • No separated the guest network. Guest is able to access LAN.
  • Network security concern as more IOT devices connected into home network.
  • Will affect internet connection, when doing any change with All-In-One server.
  • Consider to upgrade to WiFi6 with better wireless connection and VLAN setup
  • Upgrade to 2.5G wire LAN network connection with NAS and unRAID server.

That is why having this version 2.0 home network upgrade. This upgrade is consist of hardware and software.
Hardware
1) J4125 X86 industry PC with 4 Realtek 8125B 2.5G NIC port. (Got from Taobao.com)
It has less electrical power consumption and can be installed with vary router software like openwrt,
pfsense, opnsense and ROS etc.  

2) Unifi Access Point WiFi 6 Lite (Plan to get from Unifi online official store)
It has the latest WiFi6 standard and can be controlled by software AC.  It will provide a better WiFi coverage and connection speed.  VLAN setup is easy through AC software.

Software.
1) Pfsense (https://www.pfsense.org/)
It is working as main router for internet connection.

2) Openwrt (https://openwrt.org/)
It is working as side router to provide LAN bridge function and plug as KMS server etc.
